  1. Does the Scangauge II work in my vehicle?

A list of compatible Australian vehicles is being compiled by our staff through direct testing and using customer feedback. This list is continually being updated and is available online here.

Most vehicles sold in the Australian market from 2007 onwards are now compatible, though there are still some exceptions.

The ScanGauge requires the vehicle to be either OBDII or EOBD compatible. In the US and Canada, cars and light trucks were required to be OBDII compatible starting in 1996. In Europe, EOBD was phased in between 2002 and 2004. Other parts of the world have required one of them starting in various years.

My current understanding is that there is still no requirement for Australian vehicles to be OBDII, but most manufacturers are now releasing them with OBDII to standardise their vehicle diagnostics globally. Many older vehicles also utilised OBDII as they were also sold to the USA/Canada/European markets.

Tracking down exactly when particular vehicles began using OBDII or EOBD in Australia is a time cosuming task. At this time most vehicles we have tested the ScanGauge II on do work, but there are a few that do not. For example the ScanGauge II does not work on most pre 2005 Toyota four wheel drives.

Below is a list of the most commonly enquired about vehicles that the ScanGaugeII does not work in:

Jeep Cherokee 2.8l and 2.5l Diesel (pre 2008 models, most gauges and trip functions do not work unless Jeep ECU update recall has been completed by dealer)
Nissan Patrol (all models except 3.0L CRD)
Toyota LandCruiser 100 series (all models except 2005 on V8 petrol)
Toyota LandCruiser 78 and 79 series ute and troop carrier (all models except latest V8 Turbo diesel)
Toyota LandCruiser Prado 90 series (all models)
Toyota LandCruiser Prado 120 series (pre 2005 and 1KZ-TE turbo diesel) *D4D works fine.
Toyota HiLux (pre 2005 and non D4D diesels)

Please view our compatibility list here. NOTE: If your vehicle is not included in our list it does not mean that it will not work, just that we have not directly tested the ScanGaugeII or had a customer report compatibility on your type of vehicle. We suggest you conduct a google search with keywords of ScanGauge and your vehicle model and year. Google search results will usually lead to some online message forums where users have discussed compatibility with your vehicle.

If in doubt, call us before making your purchase!

We can arrange a time to test the Scangauge II on your vehicle at our offices in Clarence NSW. If you wish to organise a time to do so, please call us on 1300 796 960.

  2. The ScanGauge II quick start guide talks about getting your AVG reading as high as possible. That doesn't make sense!

The quick start guide has been written by Americans and they like to use that time honoured fuel consumption reading of miles per gallon (MPG), so in that respect if you have your ScanGauge setup to use MPG, you want a high AVG reading. If you are using litres per hundred kilometres (LHK) then you want the AVG reading to be as low as possible.

  3. I have just set up my ScanGauge and the fuel consumption reading cannot be accurate, whats wrong?

To get accurate fuel consumption figures the ScanGauge II must be calibrated over a number of tank fillups. The user manual has details of the calibration procedures on pages 18-21.

  4. I have programmed in the kilowatts X-Gauge but it is displaying a maximum of 30-40 kW when I know my cars output is many times higher than that, whats gone wrong?

The kilowatts X-Gauge requires the ScanGauge II to be correctly callibrated for fuel usage before the gauge will be accurate. The calibration procedure is on pages 18-21 of the users manual.

  5. Is the kilowatts X-Gauge as accurate as a dyno?
No. The kilowatts X-Gauge is a calculated output at the flywheel and does not reflect output at the wheels. So transmission loss is not reflected in the X-gauge.

  6. Everytime I use the fillup function I have to change the calibration figure, whats going wrong?

There are many variables to take in to consideration regarding how much fuel you are putting into your vehicle.

    1. Each fuel bowser can be out of calibration by varying margins. (Are they ever in our favour??)
    2. The fuel can be at different temperatures and can condense once cooled.
    3. Your vehicle may be parked on a slope or be on a different angle to previous fillups.
    4. The fuel bowser may auto cutoff at different levels.
    5. You might be using a fast fillup diesel bowser and the bowser has cutoff earlier than usual due to diesel foaming.

  7. I need to monitor automatic transmission temperature, can the ScanGauge II do this?
Yes, BUT.... it involes programming in an X-Gauge to suit your vehicle. Not all models are supported. We have developed a TFT X-Gauge for Holden vehicles (tested on the Jackaroo) and we are working on gauges for Ford (F250) and Toyota (Prado 120 and LC200) but it is not known when these will be ready. There are TFT X-Gauges listed in the X-Gauge commands list here, but these relate to vehicles in the American market and may not work on Australian vehicles.

  8. What do I do when I only partially fillup my tank?
Doing a partial fillup will cause all trip computer readings in the SGII to be wrong until a full fuel load is added and the Fillup function is used correctly. When doing a partial fillup when your SGII has not been tuned in properly basically causes you to lose an opportunity to tune the SGII into the correct fuel usage. Its not the end of the world but is slows the tuning process down.

    You have two options:

    1. Do a partial fillup, go to FILLUP> and do not adjust the figure displayed, just press DONE. (missed opportunity to tune in)
    2. Do a partial fillup and not touch the SGII at all, BUT record the amount of litres added somewhere and add this figure in the next time you fill the tank. So, if on one occasion you did a partial fill of 20 litres and the next time you did a full fill and added 50 litres, go to the FILLUP> screen and tune the SGII to say that you have just added 70 litres, this still lets you have a tuning opportunity on the SGII.

  9. Is there a kilometres per litre (KPL) gauge?

The first few firmware revisions of the SGII did in fact have KPL as this was the metric equivalent of MPG used in the USA. Many users of the SGII in metric based countries asked Linear Logic (the manufacturer) if they could have the more widely used LHK gauge added, so Linear Logic replaced KPL with LHK. Some time ago we asked Linear Logic if the KPL gauge can be added back in to the SGII but unfortunately it is not possible as the firmware of the SGII cannot support both gauges at this time.

  10. Will the ScanGauge II be able to clear my trouble codes and turn off my "Check Engine" light?

The ScanGauge II will clear the codes and turn off the check engine light on 99% of 1996 and newer vehicles.

    • The ScanGaugeII cannot detect or clear codes in some versions of the Hyundai Terracan Diesel. (this may be fixed with the new v3.17mb firmware - UNTESTED)
    • The ScanGaugeII cannot detect or clear DTCs on all Holden LS1 V8 engined Commodores .
    • The Holden Jackaroo Diesel also cannot automatically clear DTCs, though we are testing some experimental commands to clear codes manually using the SGII.

  11. How can the ScanGauge II do all of these things with only a single connection to the vehicle?
Most cars now have an On-Board-Diagnostic version 2 (OBD2 or OBD II) connector inside the passenger compartment. It is required to provide diagnostic information and allow resetting of the CHECK ENGINE light. It also provides a lot of other operating information. The ScanGauge II performs the diagnostics functions like a conventional scan tool. It also goes beyond this and uses the other data to add many more useful functions.

  12. Can I use the ScanGauge II to tell how fast and how far my teenager drove the car last night?
Yes. This information is stored in the trip computer and it can be recalled by you for up to a day after he/she used it.

  13. What if my child disconnects the ScanGauge II while they are using the car.
If the ScanGauge II was disconnected during the trip, a disconnect indicator will be displayed in the trip data.

  14. The LHK gauge is showing an extremely high or low fuel consumption figure that does not accurately reflect my vehicles actual fuel consumption.
The LHK gauge displays an instantaneous calculation of fuel consumption based on vehicle speed and throttle position. The ScanGauge II calculates this fuel consumption figure every two seconds (Normal Rate). This means that the fuel consumption figure displayed is for the previous two second period. Small changes in throttle position or load will show almost immediate changes in fuel economy. For fuel consumption readings to be accurate the ScanGauge II requires calibration via the FILLUP function. MORE>FILLUP: This screen should be used every time the vehicle is refueled. See page 18 of the user manual for the correct steps on calibrating the ScanGauge II fuel consumption. A common problem when using the ScanGauge II on a vehicle for the first time is the LHK gauge displays excessively high figures, such as 60+ LHK while accelerating, or 20+ LHK on a trailing throttle. Once the ScanGauge II is correctly calibrated over a few tank fulls of fuel, the LHK gauge should accurately reflect your vehicles instantaneous fuel consumption.

  15. My ScanGaugeII is reporting an error code. Can you tell me how to fix my vehicle?

    Short answer....No.

Ample Outdoors will provide support for getting the ScanGaugeII setup with your vehicle and we provide the DTC list on our website for our customers convenience, but we will not provide any vehicle diagnosis or repair advice. If your vehicle is throwing out trouble codes, the next step is for you to take your vehicle to a dealer/mechanic and have the problem fully diagnosed.

  16. I have a diesel engine with LPG injection, can the ScanGaugeII be used to calculate fuel consumption?

    Probably not.....

The ScanGaugeII has inbuilt settings for calculating Diesel, Petrol, LPG and Hybrid (Prius) fuel consumption, but it can only be set to one fuel type at any one time. If your LPG injection system and tank capacity is perfectly matched to the diesel fuel system so that when the diesel tank reads as empty the LPG tank is also fully depleted the SGII MAY be able to be used to calculate total combined fuel consumption. If you set the fuel tank capacity to match the combined total of both the diesel and LPG tanks and set the ScanGaugeII to diesel, after calibrating the SGII using the fillup function the SGII will be tuned to the general combined fuel consumption of the Diesel/LPG system. If the LPG injection system is varying the amount of LPG injected depending on throttle position the SGII will most likely not be able to be tuned accurately.

  17. What firmware changes have there been?

Versions 3.0 to 3.14 - Base ScanGauge features were in place, minor technical changes were made to prepare for X-Gauge release.

    Version 3.15 - (2007) X-Gauge functionality added.

Version 3.16 - (~2009) AVG and TFC X-Gauges included in firmware.

Version 3.17 - (2009) Minor bugfix release for the Gallons/Litres to Empty X-Gauge, sometimes the word Gallons or Litres would flash across the Gauge screen on some vehicles.

Version 3.17mb - (05/2010) Minor bugfix release for some vehicles that use the KWPF protocol (particularly vehicles that used a Mercedes Benz engine) Fixes a timing issue that prevented the SGII connecting to some KWPF vehicles.

Future Firmware rumours - There are many rumours on the net, none of which we can confirm (as we do not know!)

Most of the talk on internet forums seem to focus on the possibility of the following new features......

    • Firmware upgrades done over the internet.
    • New Hi Res colour LCD screen.
    • Data logging ability - requiring an increase to onboard RAM or the addition of a memory card slot.
    • PC interface/syncronisation - USB port?

  18. I need toaccurately monitor boost pressure, can the ScanGaugeII do this?

There is a Turbo Boost pressure X-Gauge listed in our X-Gauge information page .

This X-Gauge works by deducting the avarage atmospheric pressure from the MAP reading. The atmospheric pressure reading is static and changes in the weather or altitude will effect the accuracy of the boost gauge reading. The boost gauge should be used to obtain a rough idea of boost pressure, for more accurate readings a dedicated boost pressure sensor and gauge should be installed in your vehicle.

  19. Does the ScanGaugeII show exhaust gas temperature readings?

    No.
